Ahead of the planned curfew set to go into effect at 8 p.m., LAPD is asking all demonstrators to leave the Civic Center area in downtown.

Protesters gathered in the area outside of the curfew zone, but there were still some confrontations when police moved to break up a crowd of several hundred people. An unlawful assembly was declared around 6:30 p.m. and according to the Los Angeles Police Department, 71 people were arrested on suspicion of failure to disperse.

Saturday marks the first full day of Marines on duty in Los Angeles, one week after protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids ignited in LA and spread to other cities across the U.S., including New York City, San Francisco, Boston, and Austin, Texas.
