Democrats were forced into a generational fight in Texas — and the next younger generation won. As Texas Republicans pressed forward with a mid-decade redistricting plan to shore up the GOP’s miniscule House minority, Democrats scrambled to gain an edge in a potential member-on-member matchup.

The two largest U.S. states have launched a congressional mid-decade redistricting war, and several other states are joining the fray ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, which Democrats hope will mark the end of Republicans’ control of the federal government.

As Texas Republicans prepare to approve and adopt new congressional maps at the urging of President Donald Trump, and Democrats aim to respond in California, several other states could follow suit.
