State leaders urge Republic Services to finalize contract with striking Teamsters as uncollected garbage piles up in Massachusetts communities and other states across the country.
Negotiations between Republic Services and Teamsters broke down late last week. Talks are set to resume Tuesday, but the impacts of the trash strike are growing more pronounced.
The work stoppage, led by Teamsters-affiliated employees demanding contract improvements, has now impacted waste collection in parts of King and Snohomish counties. Republic Services, one of the region’s largest waste haulers, is in contract negotiations with workers at five locations across the state.
As the nationwide garbage standoff between Teamsters union members and Republic Services continues, some Bay Area cities are resorting to temporary drop-off sites this weekend to appease residents’ concerns about mounting trash.
The Republic Services trash collectors strike in Massachusetts won't be resolved this weekend. The company and the union representing the workers will meet with a federal mediator again next Tuesday, July 15. No progress was made when Republic and Teamsters Local 25 met with the mediator Friday.
The Secretary of State and several members of the Boston City Council are calling on waste management giant Republic Services to go back to the negotiating table and end a nearly two-week sanitation worker strike affecting more than a dozen Bay State communities.
