North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein said July 8 that state officials were working to confirm the total number of fatalities.

Officials in North Carolina say heavy rain and flooding from the remnants of Tropical Storm Chantal forced dozens of people to flee their homes.

WRAL News reported that dozens were rescued in Durham County after rains caused the Eno River to overflow. Floodwaters also prompted the closure of multiple roads and highways, including parts of the I-40 and I-85 in Orange County, it said.
