Five immigrant detainees from Vietnam, Laos, Jamaica, Cuba and Yemen have been sent to the small nation of Eswatini in Southern Africa.

The United States has sent five men to the small African nation of Eswatini in an expansion of the Trump administration's third-country deportation program, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security said Tuesday.

Heidy Sánchez brought her young daughter with her to an appointment at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement office in Florida in April, her attorney says. Instead, it was the last time she saw her husband,

"The third countries that have received or been about to receive third-country deportees so far—El Salvador, Libya, South Sudan, now Eswatini—are marked by serious pre-existing human rights violations. This is a recipe for prolonged arbitrary detention or worse."

President Donald Trump deported five people to Eswatini last week, part of his administration’s policy of third-country deportations. “Third country,” a term used to describe Eswatini, refers to a country that agrees to accept immigrants who are refused entry to their native countries.

The memo instructs ICE employees on how to deport people to countries other than their country of origin, in some cases in as little as six hours.

Eswatini, formerly Swaziland, is a landlocked country bordering Mozambique and South Africa. The nation is smaller than Maryland, suffers from severe poverty, high unemployment and the world's highest rate of HIV and AIDS, according to the CIA World Factbook.
